THE BEACH AND PORTONOVO
JUST A FEW METRES AWAY FROM THE HOTEL LIES PORTONOVO BAY, THE PEARL OF THE CONERO
The only signs of human intervention in this ancient fishermen’s village are limited to the handful of hotels, restaurants and villas in Portonovo. Portonovo Bay is a renowned tourist destination and is surrounded by superb glimpses of uncontaminated nature.
The land around Portonovo, which lies within the Conero mountains which were inhabited as early as prehistoric times, came under the same rulers: from Ascoli Piceno, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Papal States, the French and finally Italian. The only remains of the monastic life for which this area was famous in the Middle Ages, when hermits came here in the search for silence and solitude, is the charming little church of S. Maria, a masterpiece of 11th-century Romanesque art.
Along its beach where, in ancient times, Turkish ships moored to pillage the nearby buildings, there are important historic landmarks: the Torre di Guardia (or watch tower) built in the 18th century to defend the town from pirates, and the Fortino Napoleonico (our very own Napoleonic fortress), an antique military rampart, which was transformed into the famous, charming hotel and restaurant in the late 60’s.
A gem of the Mount Conero Regional park certified with a blue flag for its clean waters, Portonovo covers a natural, uncontaminated area in which the Mediterranean scrub-land (or “maquis”) reaches down to touch the crystal clear water of the sea. The sandy shore, which was formed from the Pian Grande (literally “Large Plain”) in remote times, sparkles with the white stone pebbles of the Conero which are continuously polished by the waves. Two small salt-water lakes which have given rise to numerous myths enrich this unique landscape, part of which is now a natural reserve.
