The Renowned Tennis Program at Saddlebrook Resort The Tampa Tennis Academy was acquired in 1986 from the legendary Harry Hopman. Harry Hopman's philosophy and focus on fitness made Hopman one of the most successful tennis coaches in history, and became the foundation of the Saddlebrook Program. That focus is still under the leadership of The Tennis Program Director, Howard Moore, and the intense drills we run during our daily clinics. The Hopman Tennis Program at Saddlebrook offers tennis programs for players of all ages and ability levels. Our renowned Tampa tennis facility attracts enthusiasts from across the globe, and is home to 45 courts including all four Grand Slam surfaces. Saddlebrook Tennis has the ability to cater to the true tennis fanatics who choose to participate in our demanding five-hour a day program, offered 365 days a year, while also providing corporate meeting attendees with an opportunity to fit in a quick lesson or a few sets of competitive play. The combination of tranquility, privacy and exclusivity on property coupled with the energy of the world's top players training to reach their goals of ATP and WTA success has made Saddlebrook a historic and legendary training ground. Emphasizing super fitness, he drove and inspired some of Australia's greatest tennis players including Frank Sedgman, Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Ashley Cooper, Mervyn Rose, Rex Hartwig, Mal Anderson, Neale Fraser, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Fred Stolle, and Tony Roche. In 1969, Hopman immigrated to the US and became a highly successful teaching pro at the Port Washington Tennis Academy in New York. A fine player, particularly in doubles, he won the Australian Men's doubles with Jack Crawford in 1929 and 1930 and four mixed doubles titles. He opened his first Hopman Tennis Academy with his wife, Lucy, in Largo, Florida, and lived in the city until his death in 1985. Saddlebrook acquired the tennis program in 1986. Meet the Saddlebrook Tennis Coaching Staff Howard Moore | Tennis Program Director As a young junior born in England, Howard was coached by the late Australian Davis Cup coach, Harry Hopman. Moore joined Hopman's staff in 1978 and during that time Howard ran the Harry Hopman International Tennis Club in Bologna, Italy. Howard holds a BA in Hotel Management from Florida International University, and is also a USPTA Elite Professional and RPT Master Professional. Moore has been in the capacity of Program Director of Saddlebrook International Tennis since 1986. Alvaro Betancur | Director of Coaching Alvaro began his junior career in his home of Colombia. He was ranked as high as 60 in the world on the ATP Men's Tour and competed in all of the Grand Slam events, except the Australian Open. Betancur has notable wins against Jose Higueras, Nick Saviano, Billy Martin, and Jaime Fillol. He represented Colombia's Davis Cup Team for nine years, and served as captain for two years. He came to Saddlebrook in 1986 and is known to juniors and top touring pros alike as one of the best technical coaches in the business. His intensity and dedication to junior tennis is an integral part of the program and is instrumental to the development of Saddlebrook Academy players.
